Touted by locals as “One of the best pizza places in America,” Pepe’s Pizzeria is home to New Haven’s definitive brick-oven pie. Started in 1925 by Frank Pepe, the restaurant is so popular it has spawned several other locations, including ones at Mohegan Sun casino and in Yonkers, and even one right next door called The Spot. Fans swear by the original location, however, which sells an array of t-shirts, hats, and other merchandise so diners can show their pride. The menu offers only pizza, in the basic small, medium, and large, with fresh and sometimes unique toppings like clams, bacon, and chicken. Customers can watch the pizza being pushed in and out of the huge brick oven while pouring over vintage family photos of Frank himself. Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria’s delicious pies are so popular that there’s often a wait—but there’s always take out!
