If you want to visit a zoo with real history, the Philadelphia Zoo is a great choice. The City of Brotherly Love has the honor of boasting the first zoo in the United States and since its inception in 1874 (it was supposed to open in 1859, but a little event called the Civil War delayed it a bit) the zoo has grown by leaps and bounds. With 42 acres, this is a fairly massive zoo that houses over 1,300 animals, including many that are rare and endangered. The Philadelphia Zoo is famous nationwide for its breeding program, which has helped preserve a number of threatened populations. Some of the most popular exhibits include the Big Cat Falls, famous from the movie Rocky II, which has awesome African lions, jaguars, pumas, and more and the McNeil Avian Center, chock full of awesome birds from all over the world. For a unique perspective, take the Zooballoon 400 feet into the air for a top-down view of the Zoo.

Pennypack Park has been a popular gathering place for community members and visitors for decades. Now widely associated with the annual Pennypack Park Festival, which began as a grassroots project in the 1970s for weekly musical performances, the park has a long history of creativity. Most activity still revolves around the yearly festival—it was revived in the past decade to restore the bandshell and the park’s musical presence—and it now boasts a namesake scholarship as well as plenty of fundraising efforts and events. A visit to Pennypack Park will make it easy to see why this green space is worth all the fuss.

Barnes Foundation: Philly’s Art Endowment

One of the most awesome things about America is when millionaires use some of their cash to start programs that bring art and culture to the masses. Case in point: Albert C. Barnes, who made fat boatloads of money from the development of an antimicrobial drug. With some of that, he established the Barnes Foundation, an art institution in the Philadelphia suburbs that now boasts over 2,500 pieces. The museum exhibits paintings from French impressionist masters like Cezanne and Monet, a number of Van Goghs, and a variety of ancient African, Greek, and Roman pieces. The displays are not arranged by similarity, as in many museums, but rather creatively, to encourage comparison and discussion. Take a tour or browse on your own—this spot is worth a visit.
