Friday Night Fireworks in New Hope
September 2, 2011
The Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce and Lambertville Chambers of Commerce will present Friday Night Fireworks, a spectacle of lights over the Delaware River. Orchestrated by Garden State Fireworks, a glittering ten-minute firework show will illuminate the sky over the Delaware River for the summer season. In addition, most retail businesses on both sides of the river will stay open late. The fireworks displays will take place, at the same launch site each week, about 500 feet south of the New Hope Lambertville Free Bridge, about 500 feet offshore on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River. In the case of inclement weather, please check the website by 12 noon on Friday's for possible cancellations. Every Friday night at 9:30pm, the Chambers have coordinated a special guest to initiate the countdown of blasting-off fireworks from the Delaware River. For more information, click here.

There’s no need to get bugged out over bugs once you’ve gotten up close and personal with them at The Insectarium. This all-insect museum is the largest in the country and boasts thousands of mounted creepy crawlies, live species exhibits, and plenty of interactive displays for visitors of every age. Open since 1992, the museum is set on teaching people about the often-overlooked world of anthropods, offering exhibits—including a cockroach kitchen and beehive—as well as specialty tours and seasonal events. Even if the thought of spending a day with bugs isn’t your idea of a dream come true, the museum has a surprising appeal for even the most easily grossed out.

Pearl S. Buck House and Historic Site: Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Pulitzer Prize-winning Author Pearl S. Buck

One of the few historic sites in the U.S. that educates the public on the contributions of women to society, the Pearl S. Buck House illustrates the extraordinary life of the author, activist, and humanitarian (you probably read her noteworthy novel The Good Earth back in high school). Visitors can tour her 68-acre Bucks County estate, complete with beautifully manicured gardens, greenhouses, a cottage, a milk house, and a renovated barn. Inside Buck’s home, visitors can view a collection of Pennsylvania country furniture, artwork from celebrated artists around the world, and of course, a display of her magnificent awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for literature. Guided tours are offered throughout the year from Tuesday to Saturday for $7 ($6 for seniors or groups of 10 or more) and well worth it for a chance to see the legacy of one of America’s true philanthropists.

Eastern State Penitentiary: America's Most Historic Prison

Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary prides itself on being "America's Most Historic Prison"—a considerable claim given the nation's rugged past. The 11-acre site maintains the look and feel of the once controversial facility—one of the first to enforce solitary confinement and hard labor to correct criminal behavior—before it was shut down after nearly a century and a half in 1971. These days, visitors can explore the crumbling cellblocks where notorious criminals like Al Capone and Leo Callahan were once held. Admission includes an audio guide by actor Steve Buscemi as well as access to the historical exhibitions and rotating installations by contemporary artists that are funded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. In addition to the popular haunted house constructed within the prison around Halloween, the penitentiary also hosts behind the scenes tours, photo contests, and winter adventure tours. This historical locale is a unique window into America's past and an active example of ongoing education and imagination.
