February 7, 2012 by admin
Founded in 1974, The People’s Light and Theatre Company was created for active local artists to collaborate and showcase their talents for the community. The result has been a 35-year run of a theatre company that has garnered national acclaim. The perfect place for an evening out, recent performances have included Snow White: A Panto, King Lear, and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Check the season calendar for details about upcoming productions! The theatre also offers acting courses for children (grades 2-12) and adults (18+), for both the amateur actor and the seasoned performer—taught through ensemble activities, improvisation, and script work. Whether you are looking to watch skilled actors entertain and delight, or learn how to perform yourself, this theatre has it all.

Van Gogh Up Close

Wednesday, February 1st
7 to 8:30 p.m.
The Conference Center at Penn State Great Valley
All events are free and open to the community. Pre-registration is recommended.
Get an up-close perspective on the 2012 Van Gogh exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Van Gogh was an artist of exceptional intensity, not only in his use of color and exuberant application of paint, but also in his personal life. Drawn powerfully to nature, his works–particularly those created in the years just before he took his own life–engage the viewer with the strength of his emotions. Curator Jennifer Thompson will discuss his tumultuous years, a period of feverish artistic experimentation that began when Van Gogh left Antwerp for Paris in 1886 until his death in Auvers in 1890.
The exhibit, Van Gogh Up Close, runs February 1 through May 6, 2012 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The Reading Terminal Market has been one of Philadelphia’s most popular public markets since 1893. With many of its historic market stands still in use, the venue features local produce, farm fresh items like eggs and milk, Amish goods, as well as crafts and jewelry. With more than 80 merchants—two of which have a direct lineage to the original stand holders—the Reading Terminal Market is one of the prized destinations for shopping, browsing, eating, and just getting a taste of Philadelphia’s commercial cultural tradition. It bears mentioning that more than one hundred thousand locals and tourists visit the market every week, so plan your trip with plenty of time to spare and try to maintain a level of minimal stress.

Chester County Art Association: Art For The People
November 1, 2011 by admin
One great thing about the arts is that it only takes a small number of dedicated people to bring it to the rest of the world. Case in point: the Chester County Art Association, a non-profit cultural group founded in 1931 by artist N.C. Wyeth and some of his contemporaries. Wyeth is undoubtedly the most famous painter from the Chester County region, and he wanted to ensure that his fellow citizens would have access to art and culture in the years to come. The group started as an informal meeting of artists, but has since grown into a keystone of the area’s cultural life. Not only do they stage well-received exhibitions of local and national artists at their West Chester headquarters, but they also run a series of excellent educational programs for artists of all ages and skill levels.
