Distrito: A Modern Mexican Fiesta

Distrito does modern Mexican just right. With award-winning, Next Iron Chef finalist Jose Garces at the helm, the restaurant has enjoyed a steady reputation as a swanky destination for sophisticated eaters looking for an extra dash of spice. But don’t let its dressed up looks and popularity fool you—this is not a cantina designed for dulled-down gringo palettes. Distrito keeps things hot, which means diners are treated to strongly accented flavors as well as innovative preparation and presentation. Not to miss specials include the carne asada (12 ounces of rich strip steak prepared with adobo, fried tomatillo, and creamy poblano corn rice) and chuletas de cordero (lamb chops served with smoked bacon atole, chanterelle escabeche, and three-chile bbq)—but there are also plenty of familiar classics like citrus-infused ceviche, hefty enchiladas, and dressed up nachos. Prices err on the expensive side, so save this one for a unique occasion—or just for a vicarious, marginally cheaper vacation than actually heading south of the border.
