Sonata: Music To Your Mouth
October 18, 2011 by admin
Sonata is a contemporary American restaurant that has been drawing gales of praise from Philadelphia diners for its carefully-composed cuisine, using excellent ingredients in unique combinations to create truly memorable plates. Founded by chef Mark Tropea, the menu here is fantastically diverse. Each and every entrée is worth ordering. Sonata regulars rave about the incredibly decadent lobster macaroni and cheese, which takes a classic American comfort food and spikes it with tender crustacean to create a dish that is impossibly luxurious. The duck risotto balls are clever and fun to eat, packing a serious punch of flavor. The pork belly appetizer isn’t anything unusual, but the cut is cooked to pure perfection, crispy, fatty, meaty, and delicious. For entrees, the braised short ribs draw raves from diners who boast that the meat is so tender it virtually falls off the bone. Consistency is also a hallmark at Sonata, with repeat visitors saying that the kitchen’s output is always great.

Standard Tap: A Beer And More
August 17, 2011 by admin

The gastropub trend has hit Philadelphia with a bang, as many bars are taking the time to revamp their food offerings beyond the standard bar fare. One highlight of this movement is Standard Tap, opened in 1999. First and foremost, as you might expect from the title, this is a beer bar, and Standard Tap supports a wide variety of local breweries. With over twenty beers on tap, far more in bottles, and two cask-conditioned ales served from hand pumps, you can literally spend weeks just sampling the beers. The food is equally ambitious, using large amounts of locally-sourced meats and produce to create some truly unique and spectacular dishes. Some of the menu’s most successful offerings include the great chicken pot pie, which takes an American favorite and enrobes it in a fresh pastry crust with flavorful, succulent ingredients. Burgers are also fantastic, with juicy patties topped with thick-sliced bacon. On nice days, Standard Tap's roof deck is a perfect spot to hang out.

OOKA opened in 1997 with only a few seats around the sushi bar, but since then it has grown to have locations on both sides of the country. The restaurant prides itself on presenting classical Japanese cuisine in a contemporary fashion with careful attention to detail and service. OOKA’s artful creations are featured at the sushi bar, in the dining room, or at the always-entertaining hibachi grill. A performing chef will undoubtedly impress you with his culinary skill as he serves traditional hibachi entrees, but the sushi is the real star of this restaurant. Exciting starters like the mango summer roll (mango, avocado, and tuna wrapped in special rice paper) and the Sakura roll (crispy fried white fish mixed with crabmeat and honey wasabi sauce) are only the beginning. Guests can choose from a variety of sushi and sashimi dinner entrees or order an assortment of regular and signature rolls, like the tantalizing Lobster Dynamite Roll complete with fresh lobster, avocado and mango wrapped in seaweed and topped with spicy tuna and a sweet chili sauce.
