Youell’s Oyster House: A Must For Crab

Youell’s Ouster House has been serving up some of the best seafood in the Allentown area since 1905. Originally opened by a pair of speakeasy-owning brothers, it was bought by Bob Youell in 1938 who shifted the menu more towards fried food and a wider variety of seafood. Over the years, Youell’s has become even more famous for its crab dishes—sourcing lump crab meat from a distributor in Maryland for decades. Regulars rave about the crab soup, which is rich and delicious. The crabcake menu, which is kept on a separate sheet of paper, is overflowing with great concoctions in a variety of seasonings. The oysters are also excellent. In an unusual move, they also sell local honey by the jar, made from beehives on the restaurant’s roof. Service is acceptable, although prices are a little high.

Stahley’s: Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Just about every town worth its salt has one—that neighborhood bar that’s been around as long as anyone can remember, welcoming regulars and new folks with kind of hospitality that makes everyone into a regular. Allentown’s Stahley’s is just one of those bars, where generations gather to kick back and enjoy a football game, shoot the breeze, or just while away a few hours. The food here is classic steeltown bar grub—fantastic cheese steaks, excellent sautéed pierogies dripping with butter and served with sour cream, great burgers and French fries. You’re not going to get any haute cuisine here, but you’ll fill your belly. The real draw is the incredibly low draft prices; $1.75 for a beer is a deal you’re not likely to find at many other bars. The game room offers crowded pool tables and dartboards if you need to burn a few negligible calories.
