Capone’s Restaurant: A Top Notch Beer List and Quality Pub Fare

January 24, 2012 by

For an establishment named after a famous Prohibition Era mobster, it comes as no surprise that Capone’s Restaurant takes its drinks menu seriously. With a rotating selection of craft and imported beers (check the website to see what themed selection they’re offering on draft and by bottle) to the friendly and informed bartenders, this is a beer-lover’s paradise. The food consists of classic American bar food (wings, mozzarella sticks, nachos “supreme”), Italian-style entrees (chicken parmigiana, shrimp scampi, veal marsala), and grilled choices (strip steak, ahi tuna, chicken) for a substantial menu that will likely appeal to all palates. Keep an eye on the website for the changing drinks selection as well as weekly specials like all-you-can-eat crab legs.

Buona Via Ristorante: Bella Tuscany

December 20, 2011 by

Sun-kissed Tuscan splendor. The huge windows and terra cotta walls recall a Southern Italian villa, but there’s no Olive Garden cuteness here. Buona Via Ristorante is serious, uncomplicated, modern Italian fare that nods to the upscale but keeps prices reasonable. The menu is ambitious but probably a bit too large; specialties like calamari, black ravioli stuffed with lobster, and jumbo sea scallops over arugula and sun-dried tomato risotto are consistently good. The bar is superb, with a 5,000-bottle “wine wall” that’s heavy on Italian and California varieties to suit every palate and pocketbook, ranging from young Pinot Noirs to vintage Bartolos.  Happy Hour fills up fast, and a DJ spins hits at night. But the bar is separate from the restaurant, so the music won’t interfere with your dinner.

Blackfish Restaurant: Bouillabaisse to Die For

November 15, 2011 by

It's easy to see why Le Bec Fin supremo Georges Perrier allowed Chef Charles “Chip” Roman to study at his feet. This kid has talent, which is written all over his efforts at Blackfish. Look no further than how he treats bouillabaisse, such a well-known and well-loved dish that its nuances are often ignored. Roman cooks each element of the stew individually, ensuring that the mussels are as satisfying as the crisp-skinned black bass, without sacrificing the flavor of the complex saffron-anise broth. His intense focus extends to the restaurant itself, where the simple, classic, cozy BYOB atmosphere is subtly reinvented by small touches like bent-spoon napkin rings and balletically graceful servers. If Blackfish was in the city, it would be booked months in advance. Get in while you can.

Constant Craving Cafe: Healthy Delight

October 18, 2011 by

At Constant Craving Cafe, it’s the carnivores who will have to undertake closer inspection of the menu. This small Bensalem cafe does offer its share of animal proteins, but the eatery's real highlights are its sprouts, tomato basil soups, oatmeals, and other light and plant-based goodies. The meat dishes aren’t typical "meaty" meats; you won’t find ribeye steaks or bratwursts. Instead, turkey paninis and tuna salad sandwiches complement roasted vegetable salad. Organic coffee and fresh fruit juice are available at Constant Craving. They make perfect drinks in the cafe's bright interior. And at Constant Craving Cafe, "healthy" doesn’t mean "pricey." The most expensive item on the menu is just $7.50.
