Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve

It’s difficult — maybe impossible — to determine how many wild plant species existed in Pennsylvania before settlers, wittingly or not, introduced their own invasive breeds into the local ecosystem. But 800 original Pennsylvania wild plants still survive at Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, a wildlife preserve dedicated to educating the public about the importance of maintaining native plant life and ensuring that unique plant species will be around for your grandchildren and their grandchildren to see. Unless you're a botany junkie, you probably wouldn't be able to pick out snow trillum or bloodroot on your own, so the tour offers a great learning opportunity! You can visit the Bowman’s Hill website for a preview of what’s in bloom (under the “What’s in Bloom” section) to get a taste of what you’ll be seeing. And just as where there’s smoke there’s fire, where there are plants there are birds: Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve is a prime destination for birdwatchers both expert and novice.

Pennsbury Manor: Explore the Life and Times of William Penn
March 6, 2012 by admin
Founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, lived in many houses over his time, but Pennsbury Manor was by far his favorite. Although he only lived there for two years, the estate reveals much insight into his personal taste and habits. From the wide and spacious rooms to the elegant windows that reveal a breathtaking view of the countryside, Penn’s imaginative vision is showcased throughout this manor. Today Pennsbury has been renovated to its original state, and provides stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern American life. Ample research went into its restoration, and the three-story brick manor has been rebuilt on the original foundations, and has been accredited by the American Association of Museums. Guests are welcome to tour the 43-acre historic site on a weekly basis, view the beautiful estate grounds, and get a taste of what life was like back in the times of William Penn.

New Hope Winery: Great Grapes
February 7, 2012 by admin

Even Pennsylvanians can forget that a good grape grows right in their own backyard. A day spent at New Hope Winery serves as a just reminder that you don’t have to fly to the west coast for a decent cabernet. New Hope Winery’s tasting room and gift shop sits in a renovated 18th Century barn (this is Bucks County, after all). The Winery caters to anyone, ranging from those who haven’t ventured very far from Coors Light to the full-blown wine snob. The Winery's wide appeal is reflected in its prices: a tasting never reaches the double digits and bottles range from affordable to expensive. Since special occasions call for special wines, keep an eye out for things like strawberry wine on Valentine’s Day and the occasional sangria. Check New Hope Winery’s website for a yearlong offering of musical events. If you have an engagement of your own to book, the New Hope Winery’s also an ideal spot for small- to mid-sized parties.

Don’t let the title ‘museum’ scare off your youngsters! The Please Touch Museum is a far-cry from big, quiet halls where you have to keep your hands to yourself. In fact, as the name implies, Please Touch is a highly interactive educational experience. Parents will have fun guiding their children through the varied activities that encourage critical thinking and coordination. Future city planners can build their personal Utopia at City Capers, while future pilots earn their wings at Flight Fantasy. Explorers can tumble through and manipulate various features of Wonderland and Rainforest. For a dose of history, check out Centennial Exploration and Liberty Arm & Touch. Other activities include perusing the extensive contemporary and historical toy collections or seeing a play at the Playhouse Theater. The Please Touch Museum is open daily.

Brush up on the history of the region with a visit to the Historical Society of Montgomery County. This archival institution has been preserving history for more than a century with an extensive research library, rotating and permanent exhibits, a series of lecture programs, and an annual journal bulletin. If you want to get out and involved there are plenty of volunteer opportunities as well as a membership and support program to keep the society active. In addition to its main outpost, the Historical Society also owns and maintains the Montgomery Cemetery, which suffered from vandalism and neglect before the Historical Society came in and refurbished its link to the past.
