As America’s oldest natural history museum, the Academy of Natural Sciences has had nearly 200 years to build a collection of exhibits as diverse as our natural world. With a staff dedicated to researching biodiversity and the environment, the Academy is constantly building upon its permanent collections and bringing in revolving exhibits. Live animals populate the Butterflies exhibit, the Live Animal exhibit, and Outside In. The Academy also simulates various exotic environments in dioramas, puts ancient bones and bodies on display in their dinosaur and mummies exhibits, and portrays vivid examples of the food chain. Changing exhibits often pay homage to famous scientists and discoveries or examine different species and environments in greater detail. The Academy is best to explore with a child guide who will delight in the hands-on activities and live animals! Adults may also want to return solo for scientific lectures, field studies, or monthly group discussions.

With two exclusive lounges, several rentable suites, and concessions stands that include pizza, grilled meats, deli specialties, and plenty of beer outlets, there’s something for everyone.

If you want to visit a zoo with real history, the Philadelphia Zoo is a great choice. The City of Brotherly Love has the honor of boasting the first zoo in the United States and since its inception in 1874 (it was supposed to open in 1859, but a little event called the Civil War delayed it a bit) the zoo has grown by leaps and bounds. With 42 acres, this is a fairly massive zoo that houses over 1,300 animals, including many that are rare and endangered. The Philadelphia Zoo is famous nationwide for its breeding program, which has helped preserve a number of threatened populations. Some of the most popular exhibits include the Big Cat Falls, famous from the movie Rocky II, which has awesome African lions, jaguars, pumas, and more and the McNeil Avian Center, chock full of awesome birds from all over the world. For a unique perspective, take the Zooballoon 400 feet into the air for a top-down view of the Zoo.
