Happenings at the Broward Center

Florida Grand Opera is proud to present an exciting production of a classic tale – Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette – appears at the Broward Center on May 10 & 12, 2012. Directed by David Lefkowich, this production employs innovative light projection and multi-unit sets to drive the emotion behind the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers. Lefkowich consulted the libretto, pulling from it fire and water imagery that complements that mood of each scene. For instance, light projections reflecting fire ignite during the first duet between the lovers at the Capulet ball, followed by cooling reflections of water in the balcony scene. Coupled with a three-unit facade, the light projections and set work in unison to produce images and ideas. This backdrop allows the singers to truly shine by creating grandeur through simplicity.

Nothing beats the rush of racing down a charging water slide—especially on a hot summer's day. But thanks to the amenable South Florida weather, you can enjoy the fun of Rapids Water Park all year round. From plunging slides to relaxing river floats, the park has rides of all speeds and sizes, making this an ideal day-trip for families and groups of friends. Those with sturdy stomachs can team up with three friends on Big Thunder or run it solo through the darkened, 1,000-feet Body Blasters tunnel, while more laid back visitors may prefer the giant wave pool or dancing fountain.

The Perfect Public Park: Tradewinds Park

Lovely Tradewinds Park is one of South Florida’s nicest public parks, stretching over 627 acres neatly bisected by Sample Road. The park has some very unique recreation opportunities that you won’t find anywhere else in the state, so it’s very much worth a visit. The north side of the park is perfect for equestrian fans and people interested in farming—incorporating an educational farm and farm house museum that replicate how Florida’s settlers tamed the land in the 1800s, it’s ringed by miles of well-maintained bridle trails perfect for an afternoon’s riding. A miniature steam train also runs along tracks through this side of the park once a month. The south side is more traditional athletic areas, including jogging trails, an 18-hole disc golf course, a brand new softball and soccer complex and even a fishing lake with a pier to welcome devoted anglers. You can really do just about everything at Tradewinds Park.
