Healing Power: Fascinating Facts About Herbs

If you’re looking for a natural way to enhance your well-being, you’ll find a rich storehouse of health-giving benefits in herbs. But there are so many different kinds of herbs and so much information floating out there that it can be hard to know where to start in making herbs a part of your health routine. Here are some fascinating facts to help you get started learning about the wonder of herbs:

Rosemary
This is one of the most pungent herbs in existence, with a strong smell and delicious taste that can enhance just every dish. On top of that the health benefits of rosemary are legion. Rosemary contains substances that are useful in stimulating the immune system, improving digestion, and increasing circulation, and the herb also possesses compounds that reduce inflammation.

Basil
Basil, which is packed with Vitamin A, helps the body fight inflammation, protects cells from free radical damage, and prevents unwanted bacterial growth. This herb is a powerhouse for your cardiovascular health, so the next time you’re making pesto or pasta sauce, be generous with the basil.

Chives
Chives have been known to add delectable flavor to an endless variety of dishes, but their exceptional healthful properties are what really make them stand out. They are rich in allicin, a nutrient that assists in cholesterol management by reducing your LDL level and increasing your HDL levels. It also thought that chives might help in the fight against cancer because they contain antioxidants that aid the destruction of free radicals.

Cinnamon
This herb is hugely popular as a sweetening agent in many dishes and it is also packed with properties that make it an excellent choice for a healthy lifestyle. Cinnamon provides the body with a rich source of manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium, and studies have shown that it can have a positive regulatory effect on blood sugar levels, reduce the spread of cancer cells, and help with the management of arthritic pain.

Tumeric
This delicious herb has been a staple ingredient in Indian dishes for over 2500 years, and for good reason. Not only does it delight the tongue but it also benefits the body in countless ways. Studies have shown that Tumeric has natural antiseptic properties that can help in treating burns and cuts. This power-packed herb may also slow and prevent Alzheimer’s, stop the spread of certain kinds of cancerous cells, aid in fat metabolism and weight management, and help in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Firecreek Restaurant & Bar: A Quality Steakhouse on the Banks of the Brandywine

If you consider the name of this acclaimed eatery, the “creek” would be the historic Brandywine River, which this quality steakhouse looks upon, and the fire would have to be the impeccable grill where your perfectly cooked meat is seared to perfection. Located in a historic paper mill building, this New American destination spot has won numerous raves from customers and the press alike. The décor is modern and interesting—a huge sculpture of a grizzly bear made of carpenter’s nails greets you as you walk in the door, and the tables are raw wood and burnished metal. Every Tuesday, the long Chef’s Table is filled with diners eating from the weekly prix fixe menu, which is an amazingly reasonable $35. If you’re there to order from the regular menu, diners recommend the spectacular prime rib and seared Ahi tuna. If you’re looking for something a little more casual, Firecreek also makes one of the best burgers in town.

Buona Via Ristorante: Bella Tuscany

February 14, 2012 by

Sun-kissed Tuscan splendor. The huge windows and terra cotta walls recall a Southern Italian villa, but there’s no Olive Garden cuteness here. Buona Via Ristorante is serious, uncomplicated, modern Italian fare that nods to the upscale but keeps prices reasonable. The menu is ambitious but probably a bit too large; specialties like calamari, black ravioli stuffed with lobster, and jumbo sea scallops over arugula and sun-dried tomato risotto are consistently good. The bar is superb, with a 5,000-bottle “wine wall” that’s heavy on Italian and California varieties to suit every palate and pocketbook, ranging from young Pinot Noirs to vintage Bartolos.  Happy Hour fills up fast, and a DJ spins hits at night. But the bar is separate from the restaurant, so the music won’t interfere with your dinner.

Get It Started: Five Best Party Music Albums

January 31, 2012 by

Music is an essential ingredient in a successful party. If you don’t have the time to make an iTunes mix, there are still ways to keep the soundtrack bumping. These five albums are solid party sounds from beginning to end:

  • Will Smith – Big Willie Style. The former Fresh Prince has made a career producing inoffensive, catchy party rap songs, and this is one of his most solid albums. With nothing even resembling a ballad, it’s a great soundtrack for a summer barbecue.
  • The Rolling Stones – Hot Rocks 1964-1971 – A spectacular Greatest Hits collection drawing from the legendary British band’s most creatively satisfying period. Some of their most danceable songs are on here.
  • The Avalanches – Since I Left You – This Australian electronica group really only released one great album, but it’s a classic. Since I Left You is a cunningly assembled pastiche of sounds scavenged from all over the world, and it blends together seamlessly.
  • Pulp Fiction Soundtrack – Quentin Tarantino’s movies all have great soundtracks pulled from pop music history, and the best is probably Pulp Fiction’s collection of guitar classics.
  • Beck – Midnite Vultures – Easily the alternative star’s funkiest release, this album features whacked-out soul jams with ludicrous lyrics and irresistible beats that will get any party percolating.

Make An Impression: Five Great First Dates

The first date can mean a lot for a burgeoning relationship. It’s your chance to show that you’re a catch! If you’re looking for great ideas, here are five great choices:

Check out volunteering opportunities in your community
This can be anything from working at a soup kitchen to helping plant trees. It’ll allow you and your date to spend time together while also helping others. Even if there’s no chemistry, the date will have produced some good.

Take a cooking class together
Many romances have blossomed in the heat of a kitchen, and working together on a dish under the expert instruction of a trained chef can disclose a lot about a potential mate’s true character.

Have a picnic
If the weather’s nice, why not skip dinner and a movie and pack an outdoor meal? A picnic in the park can be an intimate and compelling way to get to know someone in more detail, and it’s cheap to boot.

Play miniature golf
Miniature golf can be a fun first date activity – since it’s an innately goofy, low-stakes game, you’ll be able to see how your prospective partner handles competition. Plus it’s a good opportunity to talk.

Take a hike
Being able to take in natural beauty and get some exercise at the same time is a great conversation starter, and when you reach your destination you’ll have shared the experience.

Film Indefinite: The Documentaries of Ross McElwee

December 28, 2011 by

Let's be clear about it: you'll probably either love or hate Ross McElwee's documentaries. Intensely personal, frequently plotless, and filmed in a first-person style that both calls attention to the artifice of the camera and makes the camera disappear, McElwee's films meditate on human relationships, historical events, and the passage of time in an utterly unique way. Much of McElwee's work can be watched online on Netflix. Here are four films worth seeing:

  • Time Indefinite. Spurred by the coincidence of a marriage and a funeral and concluding with the birth of McElwee's son, Time Indefinite is an attempt to use filmmaking as a way to comprehend the myriad significant events that punctuate our lives, endowing them with meaning.
  • Sherman's March. Begun as an attempt to trace the path General Sherman made through the south at the end of the Civil War, Sherman's March willfully allows itself to be derailed by McElwee's personal life. In the process, the film considers what it means that the plans we make are almost invariably interrupted.
  • Six O'Clock News. A course in reality TV before reality TV really existed, Six O'Clock News is an extended meditation on how film and TV cameras (and what these cameras portray) present us with a singular vision of the world.
  • Bright Leaves. Also in part a meditation on film, Bright Leaves uses the discovery of a classic Hollywood film about tobacco as incitement to explore McElwee's family history of tobacco farming along with the distinctive import of the industry to North Carolina.
