Bonnet House Home & Gardens: A Haven of Florida’s History
January 10, 2012 by admin
By the time the Bonnet House was purchased by an early settler in 1895, it had already experienced 4,000 years of Florida history. An artifact left behind by the Tequesta people suggests that human activity on the site dates back to 2,000 BC.! Now the famous home & gardens is accredited by the American Association of Museums, was declared a historic landmark by the City of Fort Lauderdale in 2002, and was listed as one of America’s 11 most endangered sites in 2008 by the National Trust and the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation. While the house gives you an opportunity to walk through Florida’s storied history, the garden gives you the chance to walk through a tranquil, tropical habitat that includes one of the largest orchid collections in the southeast United States. Five distinct ecosystems can be found on the property including the Atlantic Ocean, a fresh water slough, wetlands, a maritime forest, and an expansive desert garden.

There’s plenty to do in South Florida, but sometimes you just need to go to a place where you can let your kids go wild. Sugar Sand Park, located in Boca Raton, has been one of the most popular places for family fun in the region for over a decade, and the best thing about it is that it’s completely free. This 156-acre park is loaded with things to do, from winding nature trails that will put you face-to-face with some of Florida’s most fascinating wildlife to the awesome Children’s Science Explorium, a hands-on discovery museum designed for kids ages 5 – 12. The outdoor Science Playground is a massive three-story wooden structure complete with water features that will keep your little ones running around like crazy. A classic carousel on-site is only a dollar to ride, and Sugar Sand Park has some of the cleanest bathrooms in the country.

Ft. Lauderdale Beach: Hit The Sand
October 4, 2011 by admin
One of the best reasons to live in the Sunshine State is its beaches—because Florida is primarily a peninsula, it has a flabbergasting amount of oceanfront property. One of the most popular of South Florida’s beaches is Fort Lauderdale Beach, seven miles of glistening white sand that welcome hundreds of thousands of sun-seekers ever year. One of the most popular Spring Break destinations in the United States, these glorious beaches have been the subject of a concerted effort to become a year-round spot for the whole family. If you want to get wet, the beach has plenty of areas zoned for boating, jet skiing, snorkeling, and other ocean activities. Fun on the sand and the boardwalk includes volleyball, rollerblading, and just sitting back and watching the parade of humanity go by. Two miles of public beach are lifeguarded by Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue, so those are most recommended for families with children.
