Washington Crossing Historical Park: Visit an Important Landmark of the American Revolution

May 22, 2012 by

It’s not everyday that you can walk through a crucial landmark of American history. But if you visit Washington Crossing Historical Park, you can visit the exact spot where General George Washington and his men crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776—and marched to Trenton, New Jersey. It is this surprise attack during the American Revolution that set the stage for important battles that led to Washington’s ultimate victory. Today, you can tour the grounds of the Park and see the exact spot, and even check out yearly reenactments of this historic occasion. Landmarks such the Durham Boat House, McConkey’s Inn, the historic Thompson-Neely House, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, and plenty of other vintage houses add to the incredible experience. Beyond the historical element of the Park, the area is chock full of greenery and wildlife, as well as great paths for hiking.

Love the adrenaline rush of seeing a great racecar? Then a visit to Simeone Automotive Museum is a must. Many people don’t know that the competitive urge took over almost as soon as the first cars hit the road. Displays of those first racecars include the 1909 American Underslung, one of the first to tear up the track in the U.S. Also on display from the early years of racing are a 1911 Mercer Raceabout, a 1916 Stutz Bearcat, and a 1929 Alfa Romeo. Corvettes, Ferraris, Aston Martins, and NASCAR racers are also among the many cars you can view at the museum. Open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

New Hope Winery: Great Grapes

March 6, 2012 by

Even Pennsylvanians can forget that a good grape grows right in their own backyard. A day spent at New Hope Winery serves as a just reminder that you don’t have to fly to the west coast for a decent cabernet. New Hope Winery’s tasting room and gift shop sits in a renovated 18th Century barn (this is Bucks County, after all). The Winery caters to anyone, ranging from those who haven’t ventured very far from Coors Light to the full-blown wine snob. The Winery's wide appeal is reflected in its prices: a tasting never reaches the double digits and bottles range from affordable to expensive. Since special occasions call for special wines, keep an eye out for things like strawberry wine on Valentine’s Day and the occasional sangria. Check New Hope Winery’s website for a yearlong offering of musical events. If you have an engagement of your own to book, the New Hope Winery’s also an ideal spot for small- to mid-sized parties.

If you’re looking for live music in Doylestown, Puck is should be your main attraction. Having showcased the musical talents of big names like Illinois, Drink Up Buttercup, Honeychurch, and Levee Drivers, Puck has been a great jumping off point for many great acts from across the country. Proud to provide studio quality music in a live setting, Puck is a small intimate venue (it only holds 100 people) where you can hear a variety of musical genres like jazz, rock, blues, folk, and more. A majority of the shows are 21+, but from time to time all ages are welcome—especially when the patio is open. Grab a drink and a light bite (a full menu is available), and every Wednesday night make sure to visit Puck for Bucks County’s premiere open mic night.
