The Wilma Theater: Splendid Stage
April 24, 2012 by admin
Founded in 1973, the Wilma Theater has received more Barrymore Awards than any other theatre company on Earth, which is pretty impressive. This exceptional incubator was created to develop theatrical artists in the community and encourage the production of original works. In 1979, the company began collaborating with Czech artists Blanka and Jiri Zizka, who took the group to new levels of success. The pair moved the company to their new 300-seat theatre in 2006, and their productions have played in Philadelphia and all over the world. It’s a great place to see a performance, with incredible sightlines and acoustics, and the material is uniformly great. The group has worked with luminaries like Tom Stoppard and Arthur Miller. Their seasons are innovative and invigorating, pushing boundaries and tackling challenging subjects. The Wilma offers a number of discount programs for students and seniors. Check the website for details.

Par Breakers Golf Academy: Get in the Swing
February 7, 2012 by admin
Par Breakers pro Bernie Sheridan formerly ran Nike’s elite Golf School, but in 1998 he came home to the Philadelphia area to evangelize for golf and save you from grey hairs. What do we mean? Well, no one understands a golf swing like Bernie. Sure, he’s got all the technology used by PGA hotshots, like video swing analysis, the EDH Flightscope, P3 Pro Swing, and Zelocity Radar; but just let him look at you. Pay attention when he offers those good-natured tips. That slice—and your score—will shrink in no time. Bernie’s eye is that good. Par Breakers offers private lessons, group clinics, on-course clinics, and kids’ summer golf camps. The indoor facility is the largest in the area, with full-size simulated greens and bunkers. You can also hit the driving range, get custom-fitted for clubs, or simulate a round on one of the world’s great courses.

This archival institution has been preserving history for more than a century with an extensive research library, rotating and permanent exhibits, a series of lecture programs, and an annual journal bulletin. If you want to get out and involved there are plenty of volunteer opportunities as well as a membership and support program to keep the society active. In addition to its main outpost, the Historical Society also owns and maintains the Montgomery Cemetery, which suffered from vandalism and neglect before the Historical Society came in and refurbished its link to the past.

Montgomery County Cultural Center: More than Shakespeare & Shaw
October 4, 2011 by admin

Save that gas money, don’t stress about the parking space, and tell the babysitter you’ll be home early. Glitzy, hard-hitting theatre has come to the burbs. Two professional theatre companies share the intimate 75-seat Centre Theatre at the Montgomery Country Cultural Center; the Iron Age Company produces a new play and a classic in the fall, while the Centre Company produces a musical in the spring. Along with the annual Independent Voices Festival, in which 11 visiting companies present cutting-edge work, the MCCC hosts a uniquely rich and diverse theatrical experience that’s unknown outside Philly. The rest of the historic building is devoted to arts education for all ages. The curriculum is still new and it’s currently heavy on theatre, dance, and visual arts, but the program will eventually expand to include music and other specialties. Why go to the city when you can get challenged in your own backyard?
