]]> The local food phenomenon is bringing attention back to America’s small producers, and it’s benefiting everyone. Locally-grown produce is tastier and healthier for you, as well as better for the environment. Pennsylvania has long been one of the East Coast’s most productive farming regions, and a great way to get a sample of the good stuff they make here is at the Upper Merion Farmers Market. Only accepting vendors from within 100 miles of King of Prussia, the market is relatively small – only 20 or so vendors – but all of them are of unilaterally high quality. Some of the most popular include the Great Harvest Bread Company for fresh-baked loaves, Shellbark Hollow Farm for excellent goat cheese, and the fruits and vegetables from Livengood Family Farm. Also sample excellent local mushrooms for just five dollars a bag. There is plenty of parking in the area as well. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May through November.

]]> If you’re getting a little exhausted while shopping at the King of Prussia Mall, take a quick detour into the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery, have the friendly bartender pour you a pint, and give yourself a break. This national chain has earned a reputation for high-quality microbrews and excellent pub food. Once you’re seated, try some of the appetizers – the beer-brushed giant pretzels sprinkled with kosher salt and served with spinach dip are a favorite, as are the buffalo wings and the Kobe beef sliders. The rest of the menu mines the same ground, with frequent diners opting for the excellent burgers – try the Bourbonzola, served with a Jim Beam bourbon glaze and Gorgonzola cheese. The fish tacos are also good, if a little small. The beer selection is solid, with a variety of dark and light brews for varying palates. Service is professional and the ambience is comfortable, with plenty of TVs to catch a game.

The centerpiece of the park is the Keith House, the only standing residence of Pennsylvania’s colonial-era governors. Constructed in 1722, the house – originally named “Fountain Low” – has remained almost completely unchanged since, making it a great way to travel back in time. The park was named after Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, who was called “the most learned woman in America.” Fergusson hosted literary salons, translated important works from classical languages and other activities. Now it offers a bucolic, pastoral setting for long walks, picnics, and more. The house tours are very much worth doing, as the docents are well-informed and brimming with awesome trivia about the many families that inhabited the house. Tours cost $6 and are worth every penny, but just hanging out on the grounds is free.
