Have A Job Interview Or Attending A Career Fair? Dress For Success!
March 27, 2012 by admin
Getting ready for career fairs and job interviews? If you're a resident of YoNo Apartments, eventually you'll experience these rites of passage. So it pays to know the dos (and don'ts!) of presenting yourself on the job market.
Keep in mind the old adage "dress for the job you want, not the job you have." Employers form a first impression based on how you present yourself, including visual cues like attire. They're just trying to picture how you'd fit in at the office, so ditch the jeans and flip-flops.
Do some reasearch on the common dress styles at your desired workplace. Then, aim to dress one step more formally than is usual there. Dress the way you would for an important meeting or a big client presentation. For men and women, this usually means a dark suit that fits well.
Care for your clothes by ironing and dry cleaning. Little details like wrinkles matter! They're a visual cue about how attentive you'll be to detail. You should also pay attention to other subtle details, like covering tattoos, removing piercings, and styling your hair appropriately.
Finally, be sure to wear a smile! Employers want candidates who are happy and eager to work with the organization. You'll never get a second chance to make you first impression, so make it a good one!

Cover Letter Writing Tips for York North Apartments Residents
March 13, 2012 by admin
All good things, college included, must come to an end. Spring semester means that many of the students who live in York North Apartments are undertaking a job search. That means interviews, resumes, and cover letters. Yes, cover letters — they give you an opportunity to expand the bullet-points on your resume, and to explain how you're the perfect fit for your dream job. A good cover letter can make you stand out from a pool of applicants; if you've never written one, here are some tips:
Get feedback
Visit your college's career center, as a counselor there may be willing to help you write a first draft of your cover letter. If this isn’t an offered on your campus, you can find many templates online. You can also ask trusted friends, family, and colleagues for feedback. Having more points of view is better because it will help you understand how other people read your letter.
Get personal
Make each and every cover letter you dispatch unique! The cover letter's your opportunity to show what makes you the best fit for a specific job, and if you neglect specifics, you won't make a persuasive case. Research the company or organization thoroughly, be attentive to the ad itself, and clearly describe how your skills and experience make you the perfect fit for a particular job. And be enthusiastic!
Copy and paste with discretion
Of course, you can save some time by making multiple versions of your letter that can then be customized further in response to a particular job posting. But be sure to tailor each letter specifically to the recipient!
Proofread!
Small mistakes — like typos — can cost you an interview, since they make you seem less detail-oriented. Read, re-read, and proof-read your cover letter. Have others proofread, too, and edit carefully.

Creating Your First Resume? Here Are Some Tips!
February 28, 2012 by admin
As your college career progresses, you'll begin searching for post-college jobs. This means you'll need to create a resume! Never made a resume? We've compiled this list of useful tips in order to help you create a compelling one:
Seek guidance
Check your college career center for guidance. The counselors there are adept at helping create concise, compelling resumes. They're also expert at helping you figure out what not to include! If this service isn't available or accessible on campus, visit job search engines like Monster.com. They'll sometimes provide templates and feedback on submitted resumes. Remember that there isn't an ideal perfect template — the best resume is essentially one that will get you an interview, so don't make the perfect the enemy of the good. Make it an eye-catching, compelling instrument to help you get a call back! And keep it to one page.
Tailor your resume
Adapt your resume to fit the specfic guidelines of the job posting. Use an objective related to the position and organize your resume to help show how your skills match the job description. Don't simply send out a standard resume and expect prospective employers to do the work of interpreting how you might do the job.
Edit and revise
Triple check your resume before sending it. You don't want a typo or grammatical error to cost you a chance at an interview! at the initial stages, employers often look for reasons to thin the pile and an accidental typo — even if it's an honest mistake — could have your resume sorted into the wrong pile. Ensure that the document's formatted correctly. When given the option, send a PDF file to preserve the formatting. And be sure to send it from a professional-looking email address: an iteration of your name, rather than something with phrases like "stud muffin" or "cuddle bear."
